PPO Insurances
A Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) is the most common plan type. Members choose from a network of participating dentists. These providers agree to reduced fees, which can lower your out-of-pocket costs. PPO plans also often assist with claims processing. Typical benefits include 50% coverage for major services such as crowns, bridges and partials, 80% for basic care like fillings and as much as 100% for preventive care including exams, X-rays and standard cleanings. Annual maximums usually range from $1,000 to $2,000.
HMO Insurances
Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans, also called capitated or prepaid plans, are designed to offer basic care at a very affordable price. Participating offices receive a monthly capitation payment for each assigned patient to help offset administrative costs. HMOs generally do not pay providers per service rendered, so fees are significantly discounted. Patients are responsible for paying the dentist directly for the services they receive.
